A couple of months ago my email inbox started blowing up with a casting agent asking me to come in to audition for a food show on NBC. She said she was looking for a home cook… Yes, I fit the bill, but no thank you I don’t want to work under the pressure of the ticking clock on the wall, even though the thrill of being on TV is inviting. I have been offered these sort of reality cooking / chef shows quite a bit in the last year and a half and have turned every single one down because I really like to savor my cooking time and inhale every last aroma that floats up out of my pan.
Then I got an interesting email from Walmart , asking if I would be interested in participating on a food show on NBC called ‘ Food Fighters ‘ as a judge, since I’m part of the Walmart Mom program. This definitely peaked my interest, and since I knew I would be tasting food and not going against the clock swayed me in the direction of saying yes. Plus I had been thinking of becoming a vegetarian at the time, and thought this would be a grand way to end my meat eating chapter on national TV (as a side note, it was the last time I ate meat).
A few days later I found myself being escorted through the Universal back lot, and into a large soundstage where we , the dinner party (the food judges), were kept away from the live show in order to make a unbiased vote. I found this helpful, because knowing me I would have voted the person I liked personally for whatever reasons appealed to me. All we were told was it was a professional chef vs. a home cook, but we were not told who’s dish was who’s. What we ended up voting on or not really enjoying is yet to be seen. Tune in this Thursday August 6th at 8pm on NBC and see how chefs and a home cook fight with food, and how us judges helped determine the winners and losers of this food war.
