Raise your hand if you’ll be watching the soccer championship games! Give a grito if you’ll have a michelada in hand. Give two gritos if you want a paloma michelada.
I always know when a futbol game is about to start, my family piles into the house with bags of groceries from Walmart to make delicious micheladas. My Tia Rosa makes sure she brings a big bottle of her beloved Clamato® Tomato Cocktail because she says a michelada isn’t a perfect michelada without Clamato. She feels like the soccer game experience is so much more if she’s drinking a michelada, and says she doesn’t want to ruin the team’s suerte if she doesn’t have her drink. She claims she’s superstitious like that, I think she just loves soccer and micheladas.
Then I have my Tia Esperanza who enjoys micheladas too, but wants to incorporate her prized homegrown grapefruits she picks from her tree. To make both tias happy I make a Paloma Michelada garnished with saladitos to chew on during the intense moments of the soccer matches…. you know to calm the nervios.
Of course, my Tio Alberto has to add in his two cents and wants to set up a michelada bar outside. Obviously he has decided we must watch the game in the patio so we can yell louder than the neighbors. My family is a little spirited when it comes to soccer. He says we should bring out all the ingredients and put them on ice for easy access to our favorite championship games drink: Paloma Michelada. My tias agree and before I know it the TV and the couch are outside too! Salud!
